國際電工委員會（IEC）成立于1906年，它是世界上成立的國際性電工標準化機構，負責有關電氣工程和電子工程領域中的國際標準化工作。國際電工委員會的總部最初位于倫敦，1948年搬到了位于日內瓦的現總部處。1887-1900年召開的6次國際電工會議上，與會專家一致認為有必要建立一個性的國際電工標準化機構，以解決用電安全和電工產品標準化問題。1904年在美國圣路易召開的國際電工會議上通過了關于建立性機構的決議。1906年6月，13個國家的代表集會倫敦，起草了IEC章程和議事規則，正式成立了國際電工委員會。1947年作為一個電工部門并入國際標準化組織（），1976年又從中分立出來。宗旨是促進電工、電子和相關技術領域有關電工標準化等所有問題上（如標準的合格評定）的國際合作。該委員會的目標是：有效滿足市場的需求；保證在范圍內優先并地使用其標準和合格評定計劃；評定并提高其標準所涉及的產品質量和服務質量；為共同使用復雜系統創造條件；提高工業化進程的有效性；提高人類健康和安全；保護環境。
